Mistaken Identity: RSI And Carpal Tunnel Symptom

In the past, when dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the routine diagnosis was a repetitive strain injury, or RSI. Later, when research showed that it wasn’t exactly the case, but that the syndrome could involve both genetic and traumatic causes instead, the relationship it had to an RSI became very murky. This is because repetitive strain can still play a role in developing the disorder, and in fact, the usual sort of carpal tunnel symptom does closely resemble that of a repetitive strain injury.

Carpal tunnel research has shown in recent years that the main causes of the syndrome are indeed either genetic or traumatic, resulting from an actual arm injury, with some additional connections as well to a few particular illnesses. Some risk factors include genetics that create a narrow carpal tunnel area in the arm, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis or autoimmune diseases. And women are much more likely to develop carpal tunnel symptoms than are men. So arm injuries and many other factors predispose people to develop this disorder.

And yet, as discussed on the University of Maryland Medical Center website (http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/who_gets_carpal_tunnel_syndrome_000034_4.htm), preventing carpal tunnel problems does often relate to the type of work a person does, and whether it involves repetitive activities. For example, meat and fish packers have a high risk of developing the disorder, with others involved in equally laborious jobs coming right behind them. In such cases, what is at first diagnosed as a symptom of an RSI could instead be a carpal tunnel symptom, and the difference between them might be hard to discern.

But it’s still thought that those workers who develop a carpal tunnel symptom from repetitive work were probably aggravating some predisposition that already existed. They might have broken an arm in the past, or could have the genetic component that makes them more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. That might explain why others can do the same sort of work, with just as much strain on their hands or wrists, yet never develop the disorder. All that can really be said about connections between this syndrome and an RSI is that repetitive strain can increase the likelihood that an existing pre-condition may be aggravated.
